  • Homeschooled | 2011-2012

    Sexuality: Bisexual
    Gender & Pronouns: Male (He/Him/His)

    APPEARANCE
    Height: 5'10"
    Hair: Dark Brown
    Eyes: Dark Brown
Manner of Dress: Neat & Conservative. Criswell's wardrobe is full of ironed button-ups, sweaters, chinos, and derby shoes and everything he wears is well-kept. He's nothing if not tidy. This is equally true in terms of hygiene and he's always clean, with manicured nails and a scent of cologne. While he styles his hair every morning, slicking it back, it can be unruly and is often springing off into loose waves by the end of the day. This drives him crazy.
General Vibes: Criswell comes across as someone that's tightly wound and finicky...because he is tightly wound and finicky. While he's always polite and can be warm and keen under the right circumstances, he radiates restless, anxious energy that's difficult to overlook. He his has an irrational bent toward superstition and is always looking for signs.
Notable Features: A small gap in his front teeth. Restless hands.

    PERSONALITY
    ANXIOUS & SUPERSTITIOUS
Criswell is an uptight guy that seems to live in a constant state of wariness. He overexamines and overthinks. He dwells. He worries about everything, whether mundane or fanciful (what if spiders really can lay eggs in your ear??). While he tries to be prepared and grounded and take things in stride, he's easily overwhelmed when the world deviates from his expectations and does poorly under pressure. Even pleasant surprises tend to leave him reeling. Hold on. Let him catch his breath! He can get caught up in the momentum of a good moment and shrug off the worst of these feelings from time to time, but it's difficult for him and the nagging unease always snaps back into place before long.

From a family of Seers, including a father that foresaw his own death, he tends to look for signs and listen to his hunches despite having absolutely no talent for divination. He recognizes this shortcoming, but such feelings are difficult to shake off. And he didn't need to leave the house today, anyway.

    ORGANIZED & FINICKY
Since the chaos of day to day life keeps Criswell perpetually on edge, he finds relief in anything that gives him a sense of control. No matter how small. He values routine and order and doing things the right way. He finds comfort in keeping everything around him neat and sorted. This meticulous nature carries over into his work as well, where everything he crafts is done well and done on time. There might not be a tidier woodworking studio in all of England. Being as particular as he is can sometimes lead him into conflict with others, though, particularly those with different standards or more lackadaisical methods than his own. He's never more moody than when his suggestions are disregarded or ignored and, if given half a chance, he might just follow along behind someone and fix what they did incorrectly.

While his preference for structure often puts him on the side of those making the rules, that isn't always the case, especially if the rules go against his own standards or morals or loyalties. Even if he hates to rock the boat.

    GENUINE & STRAIGHTFORWARD
For better or worse, Criswell doesn't have the skill to act like anyone but who he is. While he isn't assertive enough to cross the line into opinionated loudmouth territory, he's direct about what he thinks and he can generally be counted on to provide an honest opinion when asked. Even when an honest opinion might be inconvenient. He wears his heart on his sleeve and is just as candid about his emotions, openly expressing fondness for friends or passion for his crafting or the existential dread of his current bad feeling. One shouldn't ask him how he's doing unless they actually want to know. He might close up when his nerves are particularly frayed but otherwise he's an open book.

Whether this fundamental sincerity is endearing or annoying or just plain ol' TMI is open for debate. Predictably, he's not much of a liar.

    LOYAL & DEPENDABLE
While Criswell typically makes choices based on his own overstrung version of pragmatism, his devotion to others can prompt him to toss whatever sense he has out the window. He's not the bravest or the strongest or the smartest guy out there but he might just be one of the most loyal and a friend in need comes before everything else. There isn't much he wouldn't do for those he cares about when push comes to shove and he wants to be seen as someone they can rely on. There's a sense of security and validation that comes with being needed too. That doesn't mean he won't fret or complain along the way, though.

Even without a crisis, he's a steadfast friend to have. While he's not a full-fledged Mom Friend, he can almost always be counted on to help out and (at least try) to keep things from going off the rails. On an outing, he's always on time, brings everything that could even conceivably be needed, and is the default designated flyer or the one that makes sure everyone gets home safely. Have fun. Drink water. Don't lose your wand.

    ARTISTIC & METICULOUS
As terribly daunting as the world is to Criswell, he wouldn't deny that it's full of beautiful things and he has a deep appreciation for all pretty distractions. Especially those that come out of human effort. Flowers just happen, so why should they get as much appreciation as a painting or a piece of music, right? A craftsman himself, he's detail-oriented and takes note of artistic technique wherever he might encounter it and it's not unusual for him to become preoccupied with gushing over admiring the work of others. While he has a varied palate and enjoys a broad range of styles, he does still have opinions and when something underwhelms him or offends his sensibilities, it's very obvious.

He's also quite critical of his own work, holding the instruments he constructs to perfect or burn it standards and rarely showing his attempts at musical composition to anyone. It's not his forte. It's just for practice. Nobody needs to actually hear them. Despite being an artist of sorts, he's more about technique and precision than creativity which is why he's better at making instruments than making music.

    History:
  • Born and raised in the magical community of Wimbourne, Criswell had a comfortable life. His mother made a modest but steady income as a music teacher and his father, living up to the Trelawney legacy, worked as a Seer for hire. While his predictions tended to be minor in nature, more focused on weather or finances or compatibility than matters of life and death, he was always right and he never had a shortage of rich clients wanting him to guarantee perfect garden parties or lasting marriages. As a child, Cris had a close relationship with his parents. His patient, practical father taught him about magic and played games with him and prepared him for going off to Hogwarts, assuring him that it would be an adventure. His eager, hard-working mother shared her passion for music with him and all but smothered him with affection. It wasn't a perfect childhood, but was quite close.

  • When the time came, he went off to Hogwarts and jumped into the experience without much hesitation....even if being away from home for the first time was a bit daunting. Crying on the first night there doesn't count if nobody saw it! He wasn't a naturally gifted wizard, but he embraced magical study and he did well enough. He carved out a place for himself within his house and made friends and led an unexceptional student life for the first two years.

  • Then his father had a vision. After foreseeing the death of himself and his wife within the next thirteen months, Carlyle made the decision to remove Criswell from Hogwarts (he would be homeschooled during this time) so that the family could spend their remaining time together and come to terms with the inevitable. While this was meant to soften the blow for their son and his father tried to make him understand that this was simply fate, he spent much of those last months an emotional, anxious wreck. It was a lot for a thirteen-year-old to understand. When the day came and his parents were killed in an accident in town, he was inconsolable...but he also knew what to do. He got his belongings together and called his Grandpa Horace. He spent several months living with his grandparents and coming to terms with his grief before it was time to go back to school.

  • When Criswell returned to Hogwarts, he was never quite the same. Being back in the company of friends and having the structure of school was all good for him, but was still depressed and full of dread for the future. Unlike his father, he couldn't see anything coming. So what was he supposed to do? In the years that followed, he grew into an anxious, sensitive young man and devoted much of his time attempting to tap into his own abilities as a Seer, though nothing ever came of it. He had hunches, but they were almost always wrong. He had dreams, but they weren't prophetic. While he was failing to become a Seer and stumbling blindly through divination classes, though, he did become a capable wizard and a reliable student. Enough so that he became a Prefect. So that's...something?

  • After graduating from Hogwarts, Criswell spent several years living with his grandparents and working as his grandfather's wandmaking apprentice. This worked well enough for a time, but the living arrangements left him feeling stiffled and making wands wasn't as fulfilling as he'd hoped it might be. He eventually decided to study the construction and enchantment of magical instruments instead after finding some of his mother's old sheet music. It was definitely a sign. So he moved out and started a new apprenticeship that's still ongoing. While this work has become his passion, the pay isn't outstanding and the invitation to more affordable accommodations was a welcome one.

...Even if Sir Forsythe's vague claims make him more than a little uneasy.

  • MISCELLANEOUS
Wand: Silver Lime. Jobberknoll Bone Core. 10". Springy.
    Patronus: Woodpecker
Familiar: A red squirrel named Awl. He's a helpful, affectionate, and opinionated creature (he chitters a lot) that can often be found in Criswell's pockets or sleeves. He also, as his name suggests, helps with Cris' work from time to time.
Favorite Quidditch Team: None. Watching Quidditch gives him a stomach ache.
Skills: Woodworking. Charms. Playing Music. Writing (mediocre) Music. Cleaning. Organizing. Being Prepared. String Figures. Manicures.
    Fun Facts:
  • Criswell's maternal grandparents, Sybill Trelawney and Horace Higglebottom, were married for a total of two weeks several decades ago. While they remained in a relationship, they got divorced because Sybill refused to take Horace's name. (Who can blame her?) They still bicker like an old married couple, though.
  • IDK. He's not that fun.
